The '''Piute Mountains''' are a [mountain range](/source/mountain_range) located in the Eastern [Mojave Desert](/source/Mojave_Desert) and within [Mojave Trails National Monument](/source/Mojave_Trails_National_Monument), in [San Bernardino County](/source/San_Bernardino_County%2C_California), [California](/source/California).<ref name="gnis" />

== Geography ==
The range crosses [Interstate 40](/source/Interstate_40) at Mountain Springs Summit, 2,770 feet above sea level. The mountains are located northeast of the [Old Woman Mountains](/source/Old_Woman_Mountains), southwest of the [Piute Range](/source/Piute_Range), and east of the [Fenner Valley](/source/Fenner_Valley), which includes the small communities of Essex, Goffs, and Fenner. The [Mojave National Preserve](/source/Mojave_National_Preserve) is to the northwest, and the [Bigelow Cholla Garden Wilderness](/source/Bigelow_Cholla_Garden_Wilderness) and [Sacramento Mountains](/source/Sacramento_Mountains_(California)) are to the east.<ref>California Road and Recreation Atlas, 2005, pg. 107</ref>

The Piute Mountains exhibit strong color contrast and texture that vary from very angular, jagged volcanics to rounded, smooth granite hills; and the ridges are cut by numerous canyons and washes.

==Wilderness==
The '''Piute Mountains Wilderness''' is in the Piute Mountains and the surrounding [bajadas](/source/bajada_(geography)) and extensive [alluvial fan](/source/alluvial_fan)s, below [US Route 66](/source/US_Route_66_in_California). Dominant vegetation is [creosote bush scrub](/source/creosote_bush_scrub), which gradually changes into a [mixed desert scrub](/source/mixed_desert_scrub) at higher elevations. The large bajadas provide excellent habitat for the threatened [desert tortoise](/source/desert_tortoise).
