# Pittsburgh Coalfield

It includes all or part of [Allegheny](/source/Allegheny_County%2C_Pennsylvania), [Fayette](/source/Fayette_County%2C_Pennsylvania), [Greene](/source/Greene_County%2C_Pennsylvania), [Washington](/source/Washington_County%2C_Pennsylvania), and [Westmoreland](/source/Westmoreland_County%2C_Pennsylvania)  Counties in [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania). [Coal](/source/Coal) has been mined in [Pittsburgh](/source/Pittsburgh) since the 18th century. [U.S. Steel](/source/U.S._Steel) and [Bethlehem Steel](/source/Bethlehem_Steel) owned Karen, Maple Creek, and Ellsworth mines. It is not possible to define sharp geographical boundaries for this district for none such exist or are reported differently.<ref Name="Lesley">{{cite book | last = J.
