**Pithus** or **Pithos** ([Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek_language): Πίθος) was a [deme](/source/Deme) in [ancient Attica](/source/Ancient_Attica) of the *[phyle](/source/Phyle)* of [Cecropis](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cecropis_(tribe)&action=edit&redlink=1), sending three, four, or five delegates to the [Athenian Boule](/source/Boule_(ancient_Greece)).[1]

The name of the deme comes from [Pittheus](/source/Pittheus), the maternal grandfather of [Theseus](/source/Theseus); so Theseus was originally a local hero. Pithus was head of [Athena Pallene's](/source/Athena) league, along with [Gargettus](/source/Gargettus), [Pallene](/source/Pallene_(Attica)), both neighboring Pithus, and [Acharnae](/source/Acharnae). The deme also celebrated its *[thesmophoria](/source/Thesmophoria)*, led by two local women.

Its site was unlocated.[2]
