**Pinto** is a [Chilean](/source/Chile) [town](/source/List_of_towns_in_Chile) and [commune](/source/Communes_of_Chile) in [Diguillín Province](/source/Diguill%C3%ADn_Province), [Ñuble Region](/source/%C3%91uble_Region). It is bordered by the commune of [Coihueco](/source/Coihueco) to the north, [Chillán](/source/Chill%C3%A1n) and [San Ignacio](/source/San_Ignacio%2C_Chile) to the west, and [El Carmen](/source/El_Carmen%2C_Chile) and [Antuco](/source/Antuco%2C_Chile) to the south. The commune shares its eastern border with the [Argentine](/source/Argentina) province of [Neuquén](/source/Neuqu%C3%A9n_Province).

## Demographics

According to the 2002 [census](/source/Census) of the [National Statistics Institute](/source/National_Statistics_Institute_(Chile)), Pinto spans an area of 1,164 km2 (449 sq mi) and has 9,875 inhabitants (5,035 men and 4,840 women). Of these, 4,278 (43.3%) lived in [urban areas](/source/Urban_area) and 5,597 (56.7%) in [rural areas](/source/Rural_area). The population grew by 10.6% (943 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses . Within ten population increases by 10.6%.[3]

## Administration

As a commune, Pinto is a third-level [administrative division of Chile](/source/Administrative_division_of_Chile) administered by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council), headed by an [alcalde](/source/Alcalde) who is directly elected every four years. The 2008-2012 alcalde is Fernando Chavez Guiñez ([UDI](/source/Independent_Democratic_Union)).[1][2]

Within the [electoral divisions of Chile](/source/Electoral_divisions_of_Chile), Pinto is represented in the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Chamber_of_Deputies_of_Chile) by Carlos Abel Jarpa ([PRSD](/source/Social_Democrat_Radical_Party)) and Rosauro Martínez ([RN](/source/National_Renewal_(Chile))) as part of the 41st electoral district, together with [Chillán](/source/Chill%C3%A1n), [Coihueco](/source/Coihueco), [San Ignacio](/source/San_Ignacio%2C_Chile), [El Carmen](/source/El_Carmen%2C_Chile), [Pemuco](/source/Pemuco), [Yungay](/source/Yungay%2C_Chile) and [Chillán Viejo](/source/Chill%C3%A1n_Viejo). The commune is represented in the [Senate](/source/Senate_of_Chile) by Victor Pérez Varela (UDI) and Mariano Ruiz-Esquide Jara ([PDC](/source/Christian_Democratic_Party)) as part of the 13th senatorial constituency (Biobío-Coast).
