The **[Ignacio Merino](/source/Ignacio_Merino) Municipal Pinacotheca** ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *Pinacoteca Municipal Ignacio Merino*), also known as the **Pinacotheca of Lima** ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *Pinacoteca de Lima*), is a [pinacotheca](/source/Pinacotheca) housed in the **Hospicio Manrique**,[1] located at the [Plaza Francia](/source/Plaza_Francia%2C_Lima), part of the [historic centre of Lima](/source/Historic_centre_of_Lima), [Peru](/source/Peru).

## History

Inauguration in 1925.

The museum was inaugurated in 1925,[2] under the presidency of [Augusto B. Leguía](/source/Augusto_B._Legu%C3%ADa) and under the mayoralty of [Pedro José Rada y Gamio](/source/Pedro_Jos%C3%A9_Rada_y_Gamio), as the *Pinacoteca Municipal*.[3] It is named after Peruvian painter [Ignacio Merino](/source/Ignacio_Merino), and also serves as the largest collection of his paintings.[3] However, the collection of Merino's works exists since 1876, when 56 paintings and a briefcase with other works were brought from [Paris](/source/Paris) to [Lima](/source/Lima), as per his will.[3]

In addition to Merino's works, it also houses paintings by [Francisco Laso](/source/Francisco_Laso), [Daniel Hernández Morillo](/source/Daniel_Hern%C3%A1ndez_Morillo), [Teófilo Castillo](/source/Te%C3%B3filo_Castillo), [José Sabogal](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Sabogal), [Tilsa Tsuchiya](/source/Tilsa_Tsuchiya), Ángel Chávez, [Fernando De Szyszlo](/source/Fernando_De_Szyszlo), and others.[3]

In 2020, Fernando Torres, cultural manager of the museum, announced that its collection would be moved to the [Metropolitan Museum of Lima](/source/Metropolitan_Museum_of_Lima).[2] As of 2023, however, this has not yet taken place, as the museum continues to reside in the Plaza Francia.[4]
