# Pimlico Spring Handicap

The **Pimlico Spring Handicap** was a race for [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) horses run annually from 1917 through 1932 at [Pimlico Race Course](/source/Pimlico_Race_Course) racetrack in [Baltimore](/source/Baltimore), [Maryland](/source/Maryland). The mile and one-sixteenth race on dirt was open to horses of either sex age three and older.

## Historic notes

For most of its duration, the event attracted top-level horses such as inaugural winner [Pennant](/source/Pennant_(horse)), the 1913 [Belmont Futurity](/source/Belmont_Futurity) winner and sire of [U.S. Racing Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) inductee, [Equipoise](/source/Equipoise_(horse)).[1] Others include 1918 winner [Cudgel](/source/Cudgel_(horse)), who beat that year's [American Champion Older Male Horse](/source/American_Champion_Older_Dirt_Male_Horse), [Omar Khayyam](/source/Omar_Khayyam_(horse)).[2] In 1921 Sandy Beal won the Pimlico Spring Handicap beating 1920 [Kentucky Derby](/source/Kentucky_Derby) winner [Paul Jones](/source/Paul_Jones_(horse)),[3] and 1922 winner [Exterminator](/source/Exterminator_(horse)) had already won a [Kentucky Derby](/source/Kentucky_Derby) and by the time he retired from racing had been named a five-time [Champion](/source/Eclipse_Award) as well as a U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee.[4]

The Pimlico Spring Handicap was a victim of the [Great Depression in the United States](/source/Great_Depression_in_the_United_States) which brought much consolidation of races at every track and a dramatic reduction in purse money.[citation needed]
