==Background==
In 1879 Grocco received his medical doctorate from the [University of Pavia](/source/University_of_Pavia), afterwards continuing his education in [Paris](/source/Paris) and [Vienna](/source/Vienna). In 1884 he was appointed director of special pathology at the [University of Perugia](/source/University_of_Perugia), followed by an appointment as chair of clinical medicine at [Pisa](/source/Pisa) (1888).

From 1892 Grocco served as a professor in [Florence](/source/Florence), where among his many accomplishments, he founded a [rabies](/source/rabies) institute.<ref>[https://books.google.com/books?id=GFUBAAAAYAAJ&dq=Grocco+rabies+Florence&pg=PA355 Google Books] British Medical Journal, Volume 1, Pages 1-772</ref> In 1892 he was also named government inspector and medical director of the baths at [Montecatini](/source/Montecatini_Terme).
