Fra' '''Pietro del Monte''' (1499 − 26 January 1572) was an Italian nobleman who was the 50th [Grand Master](/source/List_of_Grand_Masters_of_the_Knights_Hospitaller) of the [Order of Saint John](/source/Knights_Hospitaller) from 1568 to 1572.
==Biography==
Pietro del Monte was born in Italy in 1499. His original name was Guido Lotti, but took the name San Savino del Monti in 1550. He was a nephew of [Pope Julius III](/source/Pope_Julius_III). Prior to his arrival in [Malta](/source/Malta) he was a friar in [Capua](/source/Capua). He also fought in the [siege of Rhodes](/source/Siege_of_Rhodes_(1522)) of 1522.
During the [Great Siege of Malta](/source/Great_Siege_of_Malta) of 1565, del Monte was in command of [Fort Saint Michael](/source/Fort_Saint_Michael) in [Senglea](/source/Senglea). For most of the siege, the fort was cut off from the bulk of the Order's forces in [Birgu](/source/Birgu). Del Monte managed to hold the fort for 55 days until the arrival of [de Toledo](/source/Garc%C3%ADa_%C3%81lvarez_de_Toledo%2C_4th_Marquis_of_Villafranca)'s relief force on 8 September.
Del Monte was appointed as Grand Master on 23 August 1568, three days after the death of his predecessor [Jean Parisot de Valette](/source/Jean_Parisot_de_Valette), after whom the Malta capital is named. During his rule as Grand Master, del Ponte continued the construction of the new capital [Valletta](/source/Valletta).[{{cite web|title=History of Valletta|url=http://www.cityofvalletta.org/content.aspx?id=46634|publisher=Valletta Local Council|accessdate=27 November 2014}}] In 1569, he built Del Monte Gate to a design by [Francesco Laparelli](/source/Francesco_Laparelli).
