# Pierre Subdivision

The **Pierre Subdivision** is an east–west [railway](/source/Railway) line owned and operated by the [Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad](/source/Rapid_City,_Pierre_and_Eastern_Railroad) (RCPE), a subsidiary of [Genesee & Wyoming](/source/Genesee_%26_Wyoming). The line stretches approximately 118 miles (190 km) across the central parts of [South Dakota](/source/South_Dakota), connecting [Pierre](/source/Pierre,_South_Dakota), [South Dakota](/source/South_Dakota) with [Huron](/source/Huron,_South_Dakota), [South Dakota](/source/South_Dakota). It is also a part of the RCPE's east–west main route. Traffic on this line is solely freight traffic.

The line is not equipped with [centralized traffic control](/source/Centralized_traffic_control) or [automatic block signalling](/source/Automatic_Block_Signal) ([dark territory](/source/Dark_territory)). It is dispatched via radio under the [track warrant control](/source/Track_warrant) rules.

There are [passing sidings](/source/Passing_loop) at [Miller](/source/Miller,_South_Dakota) and [Highmore](/source/Highmore,_South_Dakota), with only [spur tracks](/source/Spur_track) at other locations. [Freight yards](/source/Freight_yard) are located at [Huron](/source/Huron,_South_Dakota) and [Pierre](/source/Pierre,_South_Dakota).
