**Pierre Étienne Louis Eyt** [S.T.D.](/source/Doctor_of_Sacred_Theology) (4 June 1934 – 11 June 2001) was a [French](/source/French_people) [cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church](/source/Cardinal_(Catholic_Church)) and [Metropolitan Archbishop of Bordeaux](/source/Archbishopric_of_Bordeaux) and Bazas.

## Early life and priesthood

He was born in [Laruns](/source/Laruns), France as the son of Jean Eyt and Josephine Gabastou. He was educated at the [Institute of Juridical and Economic Studies](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Institute_of_Juridical_and_Economic_Studies&action=edit&redlink=1) in [Pau](/source/Pau%2C_Pyr%C3%A9n%C3%A9es-Atlantiques), the Seminary of [Pius XI](/source/Pope_Pius_XI), the [Seminary](/source/Seminary) of the Catholic Institute and at the [Pontifical Gregorian University](/source/Pontifical_Gregorian_University) in Rome where he earned his doctorate in [theology](/source/Theology). He was [ordained](/source/Holy_orders) on 29 June 1961.[1]

After his ordination he did pastoral work in the [diocese of Bayonne](/source/Diocese_of_Bayonne) from 1961 until 1963. He then worked as a faculty member and later vice-rector and then [rector](/source/Rector_(academia)) of the [Catholic Institute of Toulouse](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Catholic_Institute_of_Toulouse&action=edit&redlink=1) and then rector of the [Catholic Institute](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Catholic_Institute&action=edit&redlink=1) in Paris in 1981.[1] He also served as a member of the [International Theological Commission](/source/International_Theological_Commission).

## Episcopate

[Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II) appointed him [coadjutor](/source/Coadjutor_bishop) [Archbishop](/source/Archbishop) of [Bordeaux](/source/Bordeaux) on 7 June 1986.[2] He was consecrated on 28 September of that year by [Marius Maziers](/source/Marius_Maziers) who was assisted by [Jean-Marie Lustiger](/source/Jean-Marie_Lustiger) then [Archbishop of Paris](/source/Archbishop_of_Paris), and by [André Collini](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Collini), [archbishop of Toulouse](/source/Archbishop_of_Toulouse). He succeeded to the [Metropolitan see of Bordeaux](/source/Metropolitan_see_of_Bordeaux) on 31 May 1989.[2]

## Cardinalate

He was created and proclaimed [Cardinal-Priest](/source/Cardinal-Priest) of *[SS. Trinità al Monte Pincio](/source/SS._Trinit%C3%A0_al_Monte_Pincio)* in the [consistory](/source/Papal_consistory) of 26 November 1994. He died on 11 June 2001 in Bordeaux[3] and is buried at the cemetery of Laruns, where he was born.
