Born in [Fécamp](/source/F%C3%A9camp), [Normandy](/source/Normandy), [France](/source/French_Third_Republic), he primarily studied drawing at the École Régionale des Beaux-Arts in [Le Havre](/source/Le_Havre). In 1957, he received the ''[Prix de la critique](/source/Prix_de_la_critique)'' and, in 1960, the [Grand Prix de Rome](/source/Grand_Prix_de_Rome). From 1961 to 1964 he took up residence in the [Villa Medici](/source/Villa_Medici), [France](/source/French_Fifth_Republic), where he met [Balthus](/source/Balthus), director of the establishment at the time.
