**Pierre Émile Berdoulat** (July 29, 1861 – November 24, 1930) was a French Divisional General who participated in [World War I](/source/World_War_I). He participated in the battles of the [2nd Champagne](/source/Second_Battle_of_Champagne) and [the Somme](/source/Battle_of_the_Somme) before becoming the [Military governor of Paris](/source/Military_governor_of_Paris) from 1919 to 1923.

## Biography

Pierre Émile Berdoulat was born on July 29, 1861, in [Pinsaguel](/source/Pinsaguel), Haute-Garonne.[1][2] His parents were Isidor Berdoulat and Alfonsina Deffes.[3][4] He studied at the lyceums of [Toulouse](/source/Toulouse) and [Bordeaux](/source/Bordeaux).[5]

On October 20, 1879, he volunteered for military service as a soldier of the [57th Infantry Regiment](/source/57th_Infantry_Regiment_(France)).[2][3] On September 21, 1880, he received the rank of corporal.[6] On October 27, 1882, he was enrolled in the [École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr](/source/%C3%89cole_sp%C3%A9ciale_militaire_de_Saint-Cyr).[7][8][9] On September 11, 1884, he graduated from high school,[10] and on October 1 of the same year, with the rank of second lieutenant, he was enlisted in the [Troupes de la Marine](/source/Troupes_de_la_Marine).[11] He then entered in the [4th Colonial Infantry Regiment](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=4th_Colonial_Infantry_Regiment_(France)&action=edit&redlink=1) in [Toulon](/source/Toulon) and took part in the fighting in the [Sino-French War](/source/Sino-French_War) as well as pacification operations in [Bình Thuận](/source/B%C3%ACnh_Thu%E1%BA%ADn_province) and [Khánh Hòa](/source/Kh%C3%A1nh_H%C3%B2a_province).[2][3][5]

On November 2, 1886, he was promoted to lieutenant.[12] He served in the [1st Tonkinois Tirailleurs Regiment](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=1st_Tonkinois_Tirailleurs_Regiment&action=edit&redlink=1) [[fr](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/1er_r%C3%A9giment_de_tirailleurs_tonkinois)] and the [6th Colonial Infantry Regiment](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=6th_Colonial_Infantry_Regiment_(France)&action=edit&redlink=1).[3][5] On January 1, 1892, he was transferred to work at the [Chief of Staff of the French Army](/source/Chief_of_Staff_of_the_French_Army).[3] On August 12 of the same year, he was promoted to captain.[13] On April 17, 1893, he married Marguerite Alice de Moines.[3] On May 26 of the same year, he was appointed head of the 4th department at the headquarters of the 2nd naval district in [Brest](/source/Brest%2C_France).[3] He then served in the [2nd Marine Infantry Regiment](/source/2nd_Marine_Infantry_Regiment).[14] After graduating from the [École navale](/source/%C3%89cole_navale) on November 27, 1896, he joined the military government of Paris as a trainee. [15]

On November 8, 1898, he was sent to serve at headquarters at [French Sudan](/source/French_Sudan) and participated in quelling the unrest there.[2][16] On May 30, 1900, he was promoted to battalion commander. [17] On January 22, 1901, he was sent to serve in the technical department of the administration of the [Troupes coloniales](/source/Troupes_coloniales).[18] On August 1, 1903, he was appointed chief of staff of the occupation corps in Madagascar.[19] On March 30, 1904, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.[20] Served in the [3rd Marine Infantry Regiment](/source/3rd_Marine_Infantry_Regiment) which participated in the [1904–1905 uprising in Madagascar](/source/1904%E2%80%931905_uprising_in_Madagascar).[2][5]

On March 26, 1908, he was promoted to colonel.[21] He served in the 28th Colonial Infantry Regiment.[2] On July 1, 1910, he became commander of the 1st Malagash Tyralliers Regiment.[5] On December 1 of the same year, he was appointed director of the 1st Bureau of the Colonial Troops.[22] On December 30, 1911, he took over as director of the colonial troops.[23] On February 14, 1912, he became a member of the National Committee for the Defense of the Colonies.[24] On October 23, 1912, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general.[25]

After the start of the war, on October 8, 1914, he was appointed commander of the 52nd Infantry Brigade. [26] On November 5, 1914, he took up the post of commander of the [69th Infantry Division](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=69th_Infantry_Division_(France)&action=edit&redlink=1).[27] On April 20, 1915, he was promoted to the rank of divisional general.[28] On April 29, 1915, he was appointed commander of the [1st Colonial Army Corps](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=1st_Colonial_Army_Corps&action=edit&redlink=1) [[fr](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/1er_corps_d%27arm%C3%A9e_colonial)].[29] During the [Second Battle of Champagne](/source/Second_Battle_of_Champagne) from September 15 to October 2, 1915, the corps under the command of Berdoulat captured heavily fortified German positions and repelled stubborn German attacks for seven days in a row,[30][5] for which he received the gratitude of the President of the French Republic, [Raymond Poincaré](/source/Raymond_Poincar%C3%A9).[31] In July 1916, during the first days of the [Battle of the Somme](/source/Battle_of_the_Somme), Berdoulat's corps was able to advance 10 kilometers deep into enemy territory, capturing 85 guns and over 8,000 prisoners.[30][5] On July 19, 1917, he commanded the [20th Army Corps](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=20th_Army_Corps_(France)&action=edit&redlink=1).[32] By the end of 1917, the corps under the command of Berdoulat as part of the [10th Army](/source/10th_Army_(France)) of [General Mangin](/source/Charles_Mangin) advanced 30 kilometers deep into the front line, drove the Germans out of [Guise](/source/Guise), capturing 12,000 prisoners, 140 guns and a large amount of equipment.[30][5] On January 21, 1919, Berdoulat remained the commander of the army corps and received the command of the 20th region.[33][5]

On February 18, 1919, he was appointed to the post of [Military governor of Paris](/source/Military_governor_of_Paris), replacing Division General [Charles Emile Monnier](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Charles_Emile_Monnier&action=edit&redlink=1).[33] After Berdoulat reached the age limit for service,[2] on July 20, 1923, he was replaced in this position by divisional general Henri Joseph Gouraud.[34]

On July 29, 1923, Berdoulat was enrolled in the personnel reserve of the headquarters of the colonial troops.[34] On January 24, 1928, by decision of President [Gaston Doumerga](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gaston_Doumerga&action=edit&redlink=1), he was appointed to the Council of the National Order of the Legion of Honor.[35] He served as president of the Offrandes nationales organization, which provides assistance to military personnel, their widows and children.[30]

Pierre-Émile Berdoulat died on November 24, 1930, in the [Val-de-Grâce](/source/Val-de-Gr%C3%A2ce) military hospital in Paris, where he was receiving treatment.[2][36][37] The farewell took place in the [Val-de-Grâce church](/source/Val-de-Gr%C3%A2ce_(church)) in the presence of the representative of the President of France, General [Henri Lasson](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Henri_Lasson&action=edit&redlink=1), the Minister of War [André Maginot](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Maginot), the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces [Maxime Weygand](/source/Maxime_Weygand), almost all members of the Supreme Military Council, including Marshal [Philippe Pétain](/source/Philippe_P%C3%A9tain), numerous military and civilians.[2][38] The funeral took place in Reims without military honors, since Berdoulat, during his lifetime, asked not to distract the troops on this occasion once again.[2][38] On December 18 of the same year, he was replaced as a member of the Council of the National Order of the Legion of Honor by Divisional General [Marie-Eugene Debeny](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Marie-Eugene_Debeny&action=edit&redlink=1).[39]

## Legacy

On September 9, 1935, on the square of [Pinsaguel](/source/Pinsaguel), with the participation of General [Adolphe Guillaume](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Adolphe_Guillaume&action=edit&redlink=1), a bronze bust of Berdoul by the sculptor [Auguste Seys](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Auguste_Seys&action=edit&redlink=1) was erected.[40][41][42]
