**Pierre Baldi** is a [distinguished professor](/source/Distinguished_professor) of [computer science](/source/Computer_science) at [University of California Irvine](/source/University_of_California_Irvine)[3] and the director of its Institute for [Genomics](/source/Genomics) and [Bioinformatics](/source/Bioinformatics).[4]

## Education and early life

Born in [Rome](/source/Rome) ([Italy](/source/Italy)), Pierre Baldi received his [Bachelor of Science](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) and [Master of Science](/source/Master_of_Science) degrees at the [University of Paris](/source/University_of_Paris), in [France](/source/France).[5] He then obtained his [Ph.D.](/source/Ph.D.) degree in [mathematics](/source/Mathematics) at the [California Institute of Technology](/source/California_Institute_of_Technology) in 1986 supervised by [R. M. Wilson](/source/R._M._Wilson).[2]

## Career and research

From 1986 to 1988, he was a [postdoctoral fellow](/source/Postdoctoral_fellow) at the [University of California, San Diego](/source/University_of_California%2C_San_Diego). From 1988 to 1995, he held faculty and member of the technical staff positions at the [California Institute of Technology](/source/California_Institute_of_Technology) and at the [Jet Propulsion Laboratory](/source/Jet_Propulsion_Laboratory), where he was awarded the [Lew Allen Award for Excellence](/source/Lew_Allen_Award_for_Excellence) in 1993.[6] He was [CEO](/source/CEO) of a start up company called Net-ID from 1995 to 1999 and joined University of California, Irvine in 1999.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Baldi's research is focused on understanding intelligence in brains and machines, through the study of the mathematical foundations of [artificial intelligence](/source/Artificial_intelligence), [machine learning](/source/Machine_learning), and [deep learning](/source/Deep_learning), and their applications to problems in the [natural sciences](/source/Natural_science), [physics](/source/Physics), [chemistry](/source/Chemistry), and [biology](/source/Biology).
