For the capital city of the US state, see [Pierre, South Dakota](/source/Pierre,_South_Dakota).

**Pierre** is a masculine given name. It is a [French](/source/French_language) form of the name [Peter](/source/Peter_(given_name)).[1] Pierre originally meant "rock" or "stone" in French (derived from the Greek word πέτρος (*petros*) meaning "stone, rock", via Latin "petra"). It is a translation of [Aramaic](/source/Aramaic) כיפא (*Kefa),* the nickname [Jesus](/source/Jesus) gave to apostle [Simon Bar-Jona](/source/Saint_Peter), referred in English as [Saint Peter](/source/Saint_Peter). Pierre is also found as a surname.

As a nickname, "Pierre" can be shortened to "Pierrot" ('Little Pierre'; [name of a famous pantomime character](/source/Pierrot)) or "Pier" ('Pete').
