The **Pieman River** is a major [perennial river](/source/Perennial_river) located in the [west coast](/source/West_Coast%2C_Tasmania) region of [Tasmania](/source/Tasmania), Australia.

## Course and features

Formed by the [confluence](/source/Confluence) of the [Mackintosh River](/source/Mackintosh_River) and [Murchison River](/source/Murchison_River_(Tasmania)), the Pieman River rises in what is now known as [Lake Rosebury](/source/Lake_Rosebery_(Tasmania)), an [artificial lake](/source/Artificial_lake) formed by the [Bastyan Dam](/source/Bastyan_Power_Station). The river flows generally west and northwest and then west again, joined by 21 [tributaries](/source/Tributary) including the Mackintosh, Murchison, [Marionoak](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Marionoak_River&action=edit&redlink=1), [Ring](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ring_River&action=edit&redlink=1), [Wilson](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wilson_River_(Tasmania)&action=edit&redlink=1), [Stitt](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Stitt_River&action=edit&redlink=1), [Huskisson](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Huskisson_River&action=edit&redlink=1), [Stanley](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Stanley_River_(Tasmania)&action=edit&redlink=1), [Heemskirk](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Heemskirk_River&action=edit&redlink=1), [Paradise](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Paradise_River_(Tasmania)&action=edit&redlink=1), [Owen Meredith](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Owen_Meredith_River&action=edit&redlink=1), [Savage](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Savage_River_(Tasmania)&action=edit&redlink=1), [Whyte](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Whyte_River&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Donaldson](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Donaldson_River_(Tasmania)&action=edit&redlink=1) rivers before emptying into [Hardwicke Bay](/source/Hardwicke_Bay) and reaching its [mouth](/source/River_mouth) in the [Southern Ocean](/source/Southern_Ocean). The river descends 191 metres (627 ft) over its 100-kilometre (62 mi) [course](/source/Watercourse).[2]

The river is impounded at Bastyan by the Bastyan Dam (and adjacent hydroelectric power station) to form Lake Rosebury; and at Reece by the Reece Dam (and adjacent hydroelectric [power station](/source/Reece_Power_Station)) to form [Lake Pieman](/source/Lake_Pieman). Both reservoir and power stations from part of the [Hydro Tasmania](/source/Hydro_Tasmania)-operated [Pieman River Power Development](/source/Pieman_River_Power_Development). The construction of the power development scheme also altered the route of the [Emu Bay Railway](/source/Melba_Line%2C_Tasmania), and submerged a variety of rail heritage sites in the vicinity of the river, notably parts of the [Wee Georgie Wood Railway](/source/Wee_Georgie_Wood_Railway) or North Farrell Tramway line.[3][4][5]

## Etymology

The [Aboriginal Tasmanians](/source/Aboriginal_Tasmanians) knew the river as *Corinna*, which is the [Peerapper](/source/Peerapper_language) word for the [thylacine](/source/Thylacine).[6]

The once-common suggestion that the river's English name comes from a convict "The Pieman" [Alexander Pearce](/source/Alexander_Pearce) who was responsible for one of the few recorded instances of [cannibalism](/source/Human_cannibalism) in Australia, is not correct. "The Pieman" was in fact Thomas Kent of Southampton, a pastry-cook who was transported to [Van Diemen's Land](/source/Van_Diemen's_Land) in 1816. After a long series of offences in the colony, he was sent to the [Macquarie Harbour Penal Station](/source/Macquarie_Harbour_Penal_Station) in 1822 but subsequently escaped, and was recaptured near the mouth of the river which now bears his nickname.[1] The river has significant timber, mining and industrial heritage along its shores.
