It is located near [Saint-Béat](/source/Saint-B%C3%A9at), [Haute-Garonne](/source/Haute-Garonne) département, in the [Comminges](/source/Comminges) [natural region](/source/natural_region). Despite its relatively low altitude, the Pic du Gar, like the [Pic de Cagire](/source/Pic_de_Cagire), is a well-known summit of the Haute-Garonne. Its imposing silhouette dominates the high valley of the [Garonne](/source/Garonne), after flowing from the [Val d'Aran](/source/Val_d'Aran). Its secondary summit, the ''Pic Saillant'' (1756 m), has a [summit cross](/source/summit_cross).
