'''Piasek''' ({{IPAc-pl|'|p|j|a|s|e|k}}; literally ''[sand](/source/sand)'') is a [village](/source/village) in the administrative district of [Gmina Pszczyna](/source/Gmina_Pszczyna), within [Pszczyna County](/source/Pszczyna_County), [Silesian Voivodeship](/source/Silesian_Voivodeship), southern Poland.{{TERYT}}

== History ==
In the [Middle Ages](/source/Middle_Ages), the area was part of the territory of the [Vistulans](/source/Vistulans) tribe, one of the [Polish tribes](/source/Polish_tribes).<ref>{{cite book|last=Orlik|first=Zygmunt|year=2012|title=Poręba: z życia podpszczyńskiej wsi|language=pl|location=Pszczyna|publisher=Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Pszczyńskiej|page=13|isbn=978-83-62674-16-9}}</ref> It became part of the emerging [Polish state](/source/Duchy_of_Poland_(966%E2%80%931025)) in the 10th century. As a result of the fragmentation of Poland, it was part of the Polish [Seniorate Province](/source/Seniorate_Province) and [Duchy of Racibórz](/source/Duchy_of_Racib%C3%B3rz). The village was first mentioned in 1468 as ''de Piasek''.<ref name="d"/>

Afterwards, the village passed under [Bohemian (Czech)](/source/Kingdom_of_Bohemia) suzerainty, and in the 15th century, it became part of the newly formed [Duchy of Pszczyna](/source/Duchy_of_Pszczyna). During the political upheaval caused by [Matthias Corvinus](/source/Matthias_Corvinus) the duchy was overtaken in 1480 by [Casimir II, Duke of Cieszyn](/source/Casimir_II%2C_Duke_of_Cieszyn) from the [Piast dynasty](/source/Piast_dynasty), who sold it in 1517 to the Hungarian [magnate](/source/magnate)s of the [Thurzó](/source/Thurz%C3%B3) family, forming the [Pless](/source/Duchy_of_Pless) [state country](/source/state_country). In the accompanying sales document issued on 21 February 1517 the village was mentioned as ''Pyesek''.<ref name="d">{{cite journal|last= Musioł|first= Ludwik|date= 1930|title= Dokument sprzedaży księstwa pszczyńskiego z dn. 21. lutego 1517 R.|url= http://www.sbc.org.pl/dlibra/docmetadata?id=9512&from=publication|journal= Roczniki Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk na Śląsku|location= Katowice|publisher= nakł. In the [War of the Austrian Succession](/source/War_of_the_Austrian_Succession) most of Silesia was conquered by the [Kingdom of Prussia](/source/Kingdom_of_Prussia), including the village, and in 1871 it became part of the [German Empire](/source/German_Empire). After [World War I](/source/World_War_I), Poland regained independence, and following the subsequent Polish [Silesian Uprisings](/source/Silesian_Uprisings) against Germany, the village was reintegrated with the reborn Polish state.

During the [invasion of Poland](/source/invasion_of_Poland), which started [World War II](/source/World_War_II) in September 1939, the village was invaded by Germany, and was one of the sites of executions of [Poles](/source/Polish_people) carried out by German troops (see ''[Nazi crimes against the Polish nation](/source/Nazi_crimes_against_the_Polish_nation)'').<ref>{{cite book|last=Wardzyńska|first=Maria|year=2009|title=Był rok 1939.
