'''''Phylloceras''''' is an extinct genus of [ammonoid](/source/ammonoid) [cephalopods](/source/cephalopods) belonging to the family [Phylloceratidae](/source/Phylloceratidae). These [nekton](/source/nekton)ic carnivores lived from Early [Jurassic](/source/Jurassic) ([Hettangian](/source/Hettangian) age) to Late [Cretaceous](/source/Cretaceous) ([Maastrichtian](/source/Maastrichtian) age) (from 201.30 to 66.043 Ma).<ref name="Sepkoski Ceph">{{cite web | last = Sepkoski| first = Jack| title= Sepkoski's Online Genus Database|author-link =| year = 2002| url = http://strata.geology.wisc.edu/jack/showgenera.php?taxon=231&rank=class| access-date = 2014-05-28 }}</ref><ref name=fa/>

==Description==
Shells of ''Phylloceras'' can reach a diameter of about {{convert|8|-|10|cm}}, with a maximum of about {{convert|20|cm}}. These primitive [ammonite](/source/ammonite)s had an involute, laterally flattened shell with a regular shell opening. They were almost smooth and the ornamentation was virtually absent or, at most, represented by simple growth lines barely visible. The striking sinuous [suture line](/source/suture_line)s were characteristic of this genus. They are reminiscent, in some ways, of the leaves of plants (hence the name ''Phylloceras'', which means " leaf-horn").

==Distribution==
Fossils of species within this genus have been found all over the world, particularly in Western Europe.<ref name=fa/>
