It has six species.<ref name="Wijayawardene et al. 2020"/> The genus was [circumscribed](/source/circumscription_(taxonomy)) by lichenologists [Klaus Kalb](/source/Klaus_Kalb) and Claudia Gierl in 1993, with ''[Phyllobaeis imbricata](/source/Phyllobaeis_imbricata)'' assigned as the [type species](/source/type_species).<ref name="Gierl & Kalb 1993"/> ''Phyllobaeis'' differs from ''[Baeomyces](/source/Baeomyces)'' by the production of the secondary chemical [norstictic acid](/source/norstictic_acid), as well as the [tropical](/source/tropical) distribution of its species. Most species have a [squamulose](/source/squamulose_lichen) thallus, but the most recent addition to the genus–the Chinese species ''[P.&nbsp;crustacea](/source/Phyllobaeis_crustacea)''–has a [crustose](/source/crustose_lichen) thallus.<ref name="Cao et al. 2013"/>
