'''''Phycella''''' is a genus of [herbaceous](/source/herbaceous), [perennial](/source/perennial) [bulbous](/source/bulbous) [flowering plant](/source/flowering_plant)s belonging to the family [Amaryllidaceae](/source/Amaryllidaceae), subfamily [Amaryllidoideae](/source/Amaryllidoideae). The genus consists of five species distributed from central [Chile](/source/Chile) to northwestern [Argentina](/source/Argentina).<ref name=TPL/>

The type species, ''P. cyrtanthoides'', is commonly known as añañuca in Chile, and the star [Gliese 367](/source/Gliese_367) is named after it.<ref name="NEW2022">{{cite web |url=https://www.nameexoworlds.iau.org/2022approved-names |title=2022 Approved Names |website=nameexoworlds.iau.org |publisher=[IAU](/source/International_Astronomical_Union) |access-date=7 June 2023}}</ref>

== Taxonomy ==

The genus was described by [John Lindley](/source/John_Lindley) in 1825.<ref name=Tropicos/>{{sfn|Lindley|1825}} After further examining specimens of ''Amaryllis ignea'' (see illustration) that he had described the previous year as ''[Amaryllis](/source/Amaryllis)'', with some reservation,{{sfn|Lindley|1824}} Lindley concluded they were a separate genus, naming two species, ''P. ignea'', and ''P. cyrtanthoides'' (previously ''A. cyrtanthoides''). Subsequently, it was considered these were the same plant, and ''P. ignea'' was reassigned to a synonym for ''P. cyrtanthoides''.<ref name=KewPignea/>

=== Phylogeny ===

''Phycella'' is located in the American (Hippeastroid) clade of the Amaryllidoideaetribe, where it is placed in tribe [Hippeastreae](/source/Hippeastreae), subtribe [Traubiinae](/source/Traubiinae). In molecular phylogenetic analysis, ''Phycella'' forms a [sister group](/source/sister_group) to the remainder of the Hippeastreae.{{sfn|Meerow et al|2000}} In 1996 the Müller-Doblies' had situated it in subtribe Hippeastrinae based on [morphological](/source/plant_morphology) criteria, by submerging it in ''[Hippeastrum](/source/Hippeastrum)''.{{sfn|Müller-Doblies|Müller-Doblies|1996}} A detailed study of in-depth relations within Hippeastreae revealed a more complicated situation with regard to the Chilean-Argentinian [taxa](/source/taxa) which had not been well represented in earlier studies. There was strong support for two major clades, representing two subtribes, with ''Phycella'' and three other genera (but not ''Hippeastrum'') forming the Traubiinae. This study also showed that one species of ''[Famatina](/source/Famatina_(plant))'' (''F. maulensis'') [segregated](/source/segregated_(taxonomy)) with ''Phycella'', and was therefore submerged in it as ''[Phycella herbertiana](/source/Phycella_herbertiana)''.<ref name=KewFmaulensis/> By contrast the remaining three ''Famatina'' species segregated with ''[Rhodophiala](/source/Rhodophiala)'' and were therefore grouped in Hippeastrinae together with ''Hippeastrum''. Consequently, ''Famatina'' has been extinguished as separate genus.{{sfn|Garcia et al|2014}} The genus ''Placea'' was also submerged in ''Phycella'', resulting in about 13 species in total.{{sfn|Garcia et al|2019}}
