***Phintella*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [jumping spiders](/source/Salticidae) found in [Eurasia](/source/Eurasia), [Africa](/source/Africa), and some islands in the [western Pacific](/source/Pacific_Ocean). It includes 59 species.

## Taxonomy

The [genus](/source/Genus) *Phintella* was [circumscribed](/source/Circumscription_(taxonomy)) in 1906 by [W. Bösenberg](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Wilhelm_B%C3%B6senberg) and [Embrik Strand](/source/Embrik_Strand). The genus name derives from the genus *Phintia*, which it resembles.[2]

The genus *Phintia* was itself renamed *Phintodes*, which was subsequently absorbed into *[Tylogonus](/source/Tylogonus)*.[3] There are similarities between spiders within genus *Phintella* and those in *[Chira](/source/Chira_(spider))*, *[Chrysilla](/source/Chrysilla)*, *[Euophrys](/source/Euophrys)*, *[Icius](/source/Icius)*, *[Jotus](/source/Jotus)* and *[Telamonia](/source/Telamonia)*.[4] Genetic analysis confirms that it is related to the genera *[Helvetia](/source/Helvetia)* and *[Menemerus](/source/Menemerus)*.[5] It is a member of the [tribe](/source/Tribe_(biology)) Heliophaninae, renamed [Chrysillini](/source/Chrysillini) by [Wayne Maddison](/source/Wayne_Maddison) in 2015.[6] Chrysillines are [monophyletic](/source/Monophyly).[6] The tribe is ubiquitous across most of the continents of the world.[5] It is allocated to the subclade Saltafresia in the [clade](/source/Clade_(biology)) [Salticoida](/source/Salticoida).[6] In 2017, [Jerzy Prószyński](/source/Jerzy_Pr%C3%B3szy%C5%84ski) grouped the genus with 32 other genera of jumping spiders under the name *Chrysillines* in the supergroup Chrysilloida.[4]
