{{Short description|4th-century BC Athenian poet of Middle Comedy}}
'''Philyllius''' ({{langx|grc|Φιλύλλιος}}), also called Phillylius, Phlaeus, Philolaus, or Phillydeus, was an ancient [Athenian](/source/Athens) [comic](/source/Comedy) [poet](/source/poet). He was a contemporary of [Diocles](/source/Diocles_of_Phlius) and [Sannyrion](/source/Sannyrion). He belonged to the latter part of the [Old Comedy](/source/Old_Comedy) tradition and the beginning of the [Middle Comedy](/source/Middle_Comedy) tradition. He seems to have attained to some distinction before 392 BC, when the ''[Ecclesiazusae](/source/Assemblywomen)'' of [Aristophanes](/source/Aristophanes) was performed.<ref>Schol. ad Aristoph. Plut. 1195.</ref>

All titles of his [plays](/source/Play_(theatre)) evidently belong to Middle Comedy. He is said to have introduced some scenic innovations, such as bringing lighted torches on the stage.<ref>Schol. Plut. I. c.</ref><ref>Ath. xv. 700, e.</ref> With regard to his language, [Augustus Meineke](/source/Augustus_Meineke) mentions a few words and phrases in his plays, which are not pure Attic.
