**Phillip J. Gillespie** (born 23 October 1975) is an Australian [cricket](/source/Cricket) [umpire](/source/Umpire_(cricket)) and former cricketer. A member of the Australian National Umpire Panel, Gillespie has umpired 6 [Women's One Day International cricket](/source/Women's_One_Day_International_cricket) matches,[1] 10 [first-class matches](/source/First-class_cricket),[2] 9 [List A matches](/source/List_A_cricket),[3] 10 [Twenty20 matches](/source/Twenty20)[4] and 9 [Women's Twenty20 matches](/source/Women's_Twenty20_cricket)[5] as of March 2017[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Phillip_Gillespie&action=edit).

## Career

He began his career in umpiring after suffering injuries to his Achilles tendon, jaw and knee whilst playing for Rowville Cricket Club in Melbourne. Wanting to stay in the game, he began umpiring in the [Victorian Premier Cricket](/source/Victorian_Premier_Cricket) competition in 2009.[6]

Making his List A debut in the fixture between the [England Lions](/source/England_Lions_(cricket_team)) and [Victoria](/source/Victoria_cricket_team) during the [February 2013 tour](/source/England_Lions_cricket_team_in_Australia_in_2012%E2%80%9313), he officiated in eight [Matador BBQs One-Day Cup](/source/Australian_domestic_limited-overs_cricket_tournament) matches.[3] Gillespie also umpired two [Women's National Cricket League](/source/Women's_National_Cricket_League) matches including the semi-final between [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales_Breakers) and [Victoria](/source/Victorian_Spirit) in 2015.[7]

Gillespie umpired six matches during the [2015–16 Big Bash League season](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_Big_Bash_League_season) and a further four the [following season](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_Big_Bash_League_season).[4] In women's Twenty20, he umpired his first match during the 2012–13 [Australian Women's Twenty20 Cup](/source/Australian_Women's_Twenty20_Cup). He has also stood in [Women's Big Bash League](/source/Women's_Big_Bash_League) matches including the second semi final of the [2016–17 season](/source/2016%E2%80%9317_Women's_Big_Bash_League_season) where the [Sydney Sixers](/source/Sydney_Sixers_(WBBL)) defeated the [Hobart Hurricanes](/source/Hobart_Hurricanes_(WBBL)) at [the Gabba](/source/The_Gabba).[5][8]

He made his first-class debut on 15 February 2015 in the [Sheffield Shield](/source/Sheffield_Shield) in the [round 7 match](/source/2014%E2%80%9315_Sheffield_Shield_season#Round_7) between [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales_cricket_team) and Victoria at [Robertson Oval](/source/Robertson_Oval) in [Wagga Wagga](/source/Wagga_Wagga) where [Doug Bollinger](/source/Doug_Bollinger) took a [hat-trick](/source/Hat-trick_(cricket)) from his [end](/source/Glossary_of_cricket_terms#end).[9] He has since umpired a further nine matches with the latest the clash between [Tasmania](/source/Tasmania_cricket_team) and [Queensland](/source/Queensland_cricket_team) at [Bellerive Oval](/source/Bellerive_Oval) in March 2017.[2]

Gillespie made his international umpiring debut during the [West Indies women's cricket team](/source/West_Indies_women's_cricket_team) [tour of Australia](/source/West_Indies_women's_cricket_team_in_Australia_in_2014) in 2014, standing in all four WODI matches. Most recently, he umpired the final two WODIs of the [South Africa in Australia WODI series in November 2016](/source/South_Africa_women's_cricket_team_in_Australia_in_2016%E2%80%9317) at the [Coffs Harbour International Stadium](/source/Coffs_Harbour_International_Stadium).[1] In February 2017, he umpired three matches in the 2016–17 [ICC World Cricket League](/source/2012%E2%80%9318_ICC_World_Cricket_League) East Asia–Pacific Region Qualifiers – [Fiji](/source/Fiji_national_cricket_team) versus the [Philippines](/source/Philippines_national_cricket_team) at the [Queen Elizabeth Oval](/source/Queen_Elizabeth_Oval) in [Bendigo](/source/Bendigo); the Philippines against [Vanuatu](/source/Vanuatu_national_cricket_team) at Canterbury Park in [Eaglehawk](/source/Eaglehawk%2C_Victoria) and Fiji against Vanuatu at Dower Park in [Kangaroo Flat](/source/Kangaroo_Flat%2C_Victoria).[10]

Gillespie was accepted into the 2015 intake of the [Australian Sports Commission](/source/Australian_Sports_Commission) National Officiating Scholarship program where he will undertake professional development and identified training activities to be able to officiate the elite level.[6] In May 2015, he replaced [Damien Mealey](/source/Damien_Mealey) on the 2015–16 National Umpire Panel.[9]

On 7 October 2022, he stood in his first [Twenty20 International](/source/Twenty20_International) (T20I) match, [between Australia and West Indies](/source/West_Indian_cricket_team_in_Australia_in_2022%E2%80%9323).[11]

## Personal life

Gillespie was born 23 October 1975 in [Frankston](/source/Frankston%2C_Victoria), an outer-suburb of [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne) in [Victoria](/source/Victoria_(Australia)), Australia. A supporter of the [Richmond Tigers](/source/Richmond_Football_Club) in the [Australian Football League](/source/Australian_Football_League), his day job is a police officer in the [Victorian Police Force](/source/Victoria_Police).[12][13]
