Philippa Jane Ballantine was born in [Wellington, New Zealand](/source/Wellington%2C_New_Zealand). She attended [Samuel Marsden Collegiate School](/source/Samuel_Marsden_Collegiate_School) and went on to graduate from [Victoria University of Wellington](/source/Victoria_University_of_Wellington) with a BA in English and Political Science. She also holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Library Studies from [The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand](/source/The_Open_Polytechnic_of_New_Zealand).
