'''Johann Philipp Gerlach''' (24 July 1679 – 17 September 1748) was a [Prussian](/source/Prussia) court architect, who built churches and public buildings in and around [Berlin](/source/Berlin) and [Potsdam](/source/Potsdam).

== Career ==
Gerlach was born in [Spandau](/source/Berlin-Spandau). In 1707, he succeeded [Martin Grünberg](/source/Martin_Gr%C3%BCnberg) as royal director of building (''königlicher Baudirektor und Leiter des Bauwesens'') in Berlin.<ref>{{NDB|6|302|303|Gerlach, Philipp|Friedrich Mielke|119028743}}</ref> King [Frederick William I of Prussia](/source/Frederick_William_I_of_Prussia) promoted him to ''Oberbaudirektor der königlichen Residenzen'' in 1720, making him responsible for all building of the state including bridges and fortifications. Gerlach directed the remodelling of the [Kronprinzenpalais](/source/Kronprinzenpalais) in 1733, and built the [Kollegienhaus/Kammergericht](/source/J%C3%BCdisches_Museum_Berlin) in 1734/35.

He also designed three mayor squares in [Friedrichstadt](/source/Berlin-Friedrichstadt): [Pariser Platz](/source/Pariser_Platz) (''Quarree''), [Leipziger Platz](/source/Leipziger_Platz) (''Oktogon'') and [Mehringplatz](/source/Mehringplatz) (''Rondell''). The [Garnisonkirche in Potsdam](/source/Garrison_Church_(Potsdam)) was his major work as an architect. Its ruin was demolished in 1963, the church is currently being rebuilt.

He retired in April 1737 for health reasons, succeeded by {{ill|Titus de Favre|de}}. He died in Berlin.
