He was born at [Neustadt](/source/Neustadt_an_der_Aisch), [Middle Franconia](/source/Middle_Franconia). He studied the [exact sciences](/source/exact_sciences) at the [Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München](/source/Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit%C3%A4t_M%C3%BCnchen) as a doctorate student of [Philipp von Jolly](/source/Philipp_von_Jolly) and [Johann von Lamont](/source/Johann_von_Lamont) (graduation 1860).<ref>{{Cite web |title=Philipp Carl - The Mathematics Genealogy Project |url=https://www.genealogy.math.ndsu.nodak.edu/id.php?id=181745 |access-date=2025-03-17 |website=www.genealogy.math.ndsu.nodak.edu}}</ref> He then worked as an assistant to Lamont, performing astronomical and geophysical research at the observatory (Universitäts-Sternwarte München). In 1865, he established, and for several years thereafter directed, a workshop for the manufacture of mathematical instruments.
