==Military career==

He saw action in the Nile Expedition in 1899 before becoming commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers on the [Western Front](/source/Western_Front_(World_War_I)) in December 1914 during the [First World War](/source/First_World_War). After receiving a promotion to the temporary rank of brigadier general in August 1915,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=29298|page=9202|date=14 September 1915|supp=y}}</ref> he went on to be commander of the [43rd Infantry Brigade](/source/43rd_Infantry_Brigade_(United_Kingdom)).
