Twisleton was [colonel](/source/colonel) of a cavalry regiment in the [New Model Army](/source/New_Model_Army),{{sfn|Reid|2004|p=40}} and was knighted by [Oliver Cromwell](/source/Oliver_Cromwell), the [Lord Protector](/source/Lord_Protector), on 1 February 1658.
