He began his career as a livestock trade auctioneer, but he became a [chartered surveyor](/source/Royal_Institution_of_Chartered_Surveyors) in 1988 to analyse antiques. Serrell has also participated in musical charity events, performing as a singer with [The Celebs](/source/The_Celebs). ## Early life Serrell was born in [Worcestershire](/source/Worcestershire) into a farming family and attended the [Royal Grammar School](/source/Royal_Grammar_School_Worcester) in [Worcester](/source/Worcester,_England), where he was a schoolmate of the [Pakistani](/source/Pakistan_national_cricket_team) [cricket](/source/Cricket) captain [Imran Khan](/source/Imran_Khan).[3] Serrell played both cricket and [rugby](/source/Rugby_union) for the school, prior to his attendance at, and graduation from, [Loughborough College of Physical Education](/source/Loughborough_University)[4][5] as a [physical education](/source/Physical_education) [teacher](/source/Teacher). In 2009, he received an Honorary Centenary Degree from [Loughborough University](/source/Loughborough_University). ## Career Dissatisfied as a teacher, Serrell changed careers to become an [auctioneer](/source/Auction), working in the local [livestock](/source/Livestock) trade until qualifying as a [chartered surveyor](/source/Royal_Institution_of_Chartered_Surveyors) in 1988, specialising in [fine art](/source/Fine_art) and [antiques](/source/Antique).[4] Serrell owns an auctioneers and valuers firm with offices in [Worcester](/source/Worcester,_England) and a salesroom in [Great Malvern](/source/Great_Malvern), established in 1995.[6] He has been a regular expert on the [BBC](/source/BBC) series *[Bargain Hunt](/source/Bargain_Hunt)* since 2016,[1] also appearing on *[Flog It!](/source/Flog_It!)* and a couple of appearances on [ITV](/source/ITV_Network)'s *[Dickinson's Real Deal](/source/Dickinson's_Real_Deal)*. He has also featured on other BBC series *[Antiques Road Trip](/source/Antiques_Road_Trip)* and *[Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is](/source/Put_Your_Money_Where_Your_Mouth_Is_(TV_series))* (where he is light-heartedly billed as Phil "The Fox" Serrell). Serrell has toured theatres as part of the "An Evening with..." shows.[3] He has regularly appeared on [BBC Local Radio](/source/BBC_Hereford_and_Worcester), and has also written a biweekly [column](/source/Newspaper_column) for the *[Worcester News](/source/Worcester_News)*. ## Music recordings In 2017, Serrell recorded a Rock version of the classic "[Sleigh Ride](/source/Sleigh_Ride)" in aid of [BBC Children In Need](/source/Children_in_Need), with fellow BBC Antique Experts [Charles Hanson](/source/Charles_Hanson_(auctioneer)), [Charlie Ross](/source/Charlie_Ross_(antiques_expert)) and James Braxton.[7][8] The single peaked at number 1 on the Amazon Rock Charts. In 2018, Serrell performed a new Christmas song called "[Rock With Rudolph](/source/Rock_With_Rudolph)" with Ross, Braxton and 24 celebrities, under the name [The Celebs](/source/The_Celebs). The song was released to raise money for [Great Ormond Street Hospital](/source/Great_Ormond_Street_Hospital).[9] The music video debuted exclusively with *[The Sun](/source/The_Sun_(United_Kingdom))* on 29 November 2018 and had its first TV showing on *[Good Morning Britain](/source/Good_Morning_Britain_(2014_TV_programme))* on 30 November 2018.
