Sampson is a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman_(cricket)) who bowls right-arm [fast-medium](/source/Seam_bowling). He was born at [Manchester](/source/Manchester). Sampson made his debut in [County Cricket](/source/County_Cricket) during the 1999 season for [Buckinghamshire](/source/Buckinghamshire_County_Cricket_Club) in [Minor counties](/source/Minor_counties_of_English_and_Welsh_cricket) cricket. The following season he made his [List A](/source/List_A_cricket) debut for the [Surrey Cricket Board](/source/Surrey_Cricket_Board) against [Shropshire](/source/Shropshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the [2000 NatWest Trophy](/source/2000_NatWest_Trophy).[1] During the 2000 season he also made his debut for [Surrey](/source/Surrey_County_Cricket_Club) against [Nottinghamshire](/source/Nottinghamshire_County_Cricket_Club) in a List A match in the 2000 Norwich Union National League. From 2000 to 2005, he represented the county in 23 List A matches, the last of which came against [Durham](/source/Durham_County_Cricket_Club) in the 2005 [totesport League](/source/Totesport_League). In his 23 List A matches for the county, he scored 47 runs at a [batting average](/source/Batting_average_(cricket)) of 5.87, with a high score of 16. In the field he took 5 [catches](/source/Catch_(cricket)).[2] With the ball he took 23 wickets at a [bowling average](/source/Bowling_average) of 38.21, with best figures of 3/42.[3] Sampson also represented Surrey in [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket), making his debut for the county in that format against [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club) in 2002. From 2002 to 2004, he represented the county in 5 first-class matches, the last of which came against [Northamptonshire](/source/Northamptonshire_County_Cricket_Club).[4] In those 5 matches, he scored 91 runs at an average of 18.20, with a high score of 42.[5] With the ball he took 17 wickets an average of 24.41, with a single [five wicket haul](/source/Five_wicket_haul) which gave him best figures of 5/121.[6] With the arrival of [Twenty20 cricket](/source/Twenty20_cricket) in 2003, Sampson made his debut in the inaugural [Twenty20 Cup](/source/2003_Twenty20_Cup) for the county against [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club). From 2003 to 2005, he represented the county in 15 Twenty20 matches, the last of which came against [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club) in the [2005 Twenty20 Cup](/source/2005_Twenty20_Cup).[7] In his 15 matches, he took 13 wickets at an average of 28.00, with best figures of 2/26.[8] In the field he took 7 catches. Sampson was released by Surrey at the end of the 2005 season. In 2006, he rejoined Buckinghamshire.
