He was a promising junior [cross country runner](/source/cross_country_runner), winning the junior men's race at the [IAAF World Cross Country Championships](/source/IAAF_World_Cross_Country_Championships) in [1993](/source/1993_IAAF_World_Cross_Country_Championships). The following year proved to be his breakthrough season, as he repeated his cross country success at the  [1994 edition](/source/1994_IAAF_World_Cross_Country_Championships), won the [1500 metres](/source/1500_metres) at the [African Junior Athletics Championships](/source/African_Junior_Athletics_Championships), and took a bronze medal in the same event at the [1994 World Junior Championships in Athletics](/source/1994_World_Junior_Championships_in_Athletics) in [Lisbon](/source/Lisbon). He also finished fifth in the [5000 metres](/source/5000_metres) race at the [1994 Commonwealth Games](/source/1994_Commonwealth_Games).
