# Philip Meldon

Major **Philip Albert Meldon** (18 December 1874 – 8 April 1942) was an Irish [cricketer](/source/Cricket) and a [British Army](/source/British_Army) officer in more than one war.

## Biography

He was born in Dublin, Ireland, the eldest son of Sir Albert Meldon.[1] He was commissioned as a [second lieutenant](/source/Second_lieutenant) in the [Royal Field Artillery](/source/Royal_Field_Artillery) on 28 March 1900,[2] and was promoted to [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant_(British_Army_and_Royal_Marines)) on 3 April 1901. From 1900 to 1902, he served with the 53rd Battery in South Africa during the [Second Boer War](/source/Second_Boer_War), and took part in the operations in the [Transvaal](/source/Transvaal_Republic), east of Pretoria, including engagements at [Belfast](/source/Belfast,_South_Africa) and [Lydenburg](/source/Lydenburg). He was wounded and return to the United Kingdom on board the [SS *Simla*](/source/SS_Simla) in May 1902.[3] He was awarded a DSO in World War I.

In World War II, Meldon was on Special Employment Foreign Office, in 1940.[4] He was held as a German prisoner from 1 April 1940.[citation needed] He died in London reportedly aged 68, on 8 April 1942.[5]

## Cricket and football

Meldon played twice for the [Irish cricket team](/source/Irish_cricket_team); against [I Zingari](/source/I_Zingari) in August 1899 and against [H. D. G. Leveson-Gower](/source/H._D._G._Leveson-Gower)'s XI in 1905. He later played two [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) matches for the [MCC](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club) in 1911, against [Leicestershire](/source/Leicestershire_County_Cricket_Club) and [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University_Cricket_Club).

Meldon also represented [Ireland](/source/Ireland_national_football_team_(1882%E2%80%931950)) at [football](/source/Association_football), playing in two international matches in 1899.[6]

Meldon married in 1925 Albreda Bewicke-Copley.[4]
