# Phil DeGreg

**Phil DeGreg** (born 1954) is an American [jazz](/source/Jazz) pianist and professor.

## Life and career

After graduating from [St. Xavier High School](/source/St._Xavier_High_School_(Cincinnati)) in [Cincinnati](/source/Cincinnati) in 1972,[1] Phil DeGreg studied psychology at [Yale University](/source/Yale_University). Later, he played in a [folk rock](/source/Folk_rock) duo in [New Haven](/source/New_Haven,_Connecticut)–area coffee shops. Influenced by the music of [Bill Evans](/source/Bill_Evans), he switched to jazz and played in a student jazz band at Yale. Eventually, he moved to [Kansas City](/source/Kansas_City,_Missouri) and joined the local jazz scene. He then studied at the [North Texas State University College of Music](/source/University_of_North_Texas_College_of_Music) from 1979 to 1982, completing a master's degree and performing and recording as a member of the [One O'Clock Lab Band](/source/One_O'Clock_Lab_Band).[2] He was briefly a member of [Woody Herman](/source/Woody_Herman)'s big band. DeGreg returned to Cincinnati when his daughter was born.[3]

In 1987, he became a lecturer in the Jazz Studies Division at the [University of Cincinnati – College-Conservatory of Music](/source/University_of_Cincinnati_%E2%80%93_College-Conservatory_of_Music) (CCM) and wrote a textbook, *Jazz Keyboard Harmony*(1994). In addition to his lecturing, DeGreg recorded a series of albums in the 1990s with musicians [Joe LaBarbera](/source/Joe_LaBarbera), [Tim Ries](/source/Tim_Ries), [Don Braden](/source/Don_Braden), [Drew Gress](/source/Drew_Gress), and [Randy Johnston](/source/Randy_Johnston_(musician)). In addition, he has performed concerts with [J. J. Johnson](/source/J._J._Johnson) (*Live in Concert*, 2007). Since 1991, DeGreg has been a professor of Jazz Studies at the [University of Cincinnati](/source/University_of_Cincinnati).[3]
