**Phi1 Lupi** is a solitary[13] [star](/source/Star) in the southern [constellation](/source/Constellation) of [Lupus](/source/Lupus_(constellation)). It is visible to the naked eye with an [apparent visual magnitude](/source/Apparent_visual_magnitude) of 3.58.[3] Based upon an annual [parallax shift](/source/Stellar_parallax) of 11.86 [mas](/source/Milliarcsecond) as seen from Earth, it is located around 275 [light years](/source/Light_year) from the [Sun](/source/Sun). The star is drifting closer with a [radial velocity](/source/Radial_velocity) of −29 km/s.[6] It has an [absolute magnitude](/source/Absolute_magnitude) of −1.55.[7]

This is an [evolved](/source/Stellar_evolution) [K-type](/source/K-type_star) [giant star](/source/Giant_star) with a [stellar classification](/source/Stellar_classification) of K5 III,[4] which means it has used up its core [hydrogen](/source/Hydrogen) and has expanded. At present it has 40 times the [radius of the Sun](/source/Radius_of_the_Sun).[9] It is a [variable star](/source/Variable_star) of unknown type, with an [amplitude](/source/Amplitude) of 0.008 in visual magnitude and a period of 4.82 days.[14] The star is radiating 1,413 times the [luminosity of the Sun](/source/Luminosity_of_the_Sun) from its enlarged [photosphere](/source/Photosphere) at an [effective temperature](/source/Effective_temperature) of 3,800 [K](/source/Kelvin).[8]
