'''''Phellodon sinclairii''''' is a native [tooth fungus](/source/tooth_fungus) found in [beech](/source/Nothofagus) forests of New Zealand. It was first [described](/source/species_description) by [Miles Joseph Berkeley](/source/Miles_Joseph_Berkeley) in 1867 as a species of ''[Hydnum](/source/Hydnum)'' in [Joseph Dalton Hooker](/source/Joseph_Dalton_Hooker)'s work ''Handbook of the New Zealand Flora''.<ref name="Hooker 1867"/> The [type locality](/source/type_locality_(biology)) was on [Maungatua](/source/Maungatua). [Gordon Herriot Cunningham](/source/Gordon_Herriot_Cunningham) transferred the species to the genus ''[Phellodon](/source/Phellodon)'' in 1958.<ref name="Cunningham 1958"/>

The [fruit bodies](/source/basidiocarp) of ''P. sinclairii'' have [caps](/source/pileus_(mycology)) up to {{convert|3|cm|in|abbr=on}} in diameter when single, or up to {{convert|7|cm|in|abbr=on}} when the caps are fused together in groups. The cap surface is black with a whitish margin. The crowded spines on the cap underside are up to 2 mm long, and run [decurrent](/source/decurrent)ly down the [stipe](/source/stipe_(mycology)). Initially whitish, they become gray in age. Dried specimens have the odour of [fenugreek](/source/fenugreek).<ref name="Maas Geesteranus 1971"/>
