'''''Phaanthosaurus''''' is an [extinct](/source/extinct) [genus](/source/genus) of [basal](/source/basal_(phylogenetics)) [procolophonid](/source/Procolophonidae) [parareptile](/source/parareptile) from early [Triassic](/source/Triassic) ([Induan](/source/Induan) stage) deposits of [Nizhnii Novgorod](/source/Nizhnii_Novgorod), [Russian Federation](/source/Russian_Federation). It is known from the [holotype](/source/holotype) [PIN](/source/Paleontological_Institute_of_Russian_Academy_of_Sciences) 1025/1, a [mandible](/source/mandible) (a dentary). It was collected from Vetluga River, Spasskoe village and referred to the Vokhmian terrestrial horizon of the [Vokhma Formation](/source/Vokhma_Formation). It was first named by P. K. Chudinov and B. P. Vjushkov in [1956](/source/1956_in_paleontology) and the [type species](/source/type_species) is ''Phaanthosaurus ignatjevi''.<ref name=Kotilosavrakh>{{cite journal |author1=P. K. In 2000, Spencer and Benton found ''Contritosaurus'' to be [junior synonym](/source/junior_synonym) of ''Phaanthosaurus''. ''C. simus'' Ivakhnenko, 1974 which is known from the [holotype](/source/holotype) [PIN](/source/Paleontological_Institute_of_Russian_Academy_of_Sciences) 3355/1, a partial [skull](/source/skull) with right [mandible](/source/mandible) from the same location, and from three paratypes, was recombined as ''P. simus''. They also found that the second species of ''Contritosaurus'', ''C. convector'' (PIN 3357/1, a mandible) is a [junior synonym](/source/junior_synonym) of ''P. simus''.<ref name=Psimus>{{cite book |author1=P.
