It was based on the 1925 novel by [Wilhelm Hegeler](/source/Wilhelm_Hegeler). [Leni Riefenstahl](/source/Leni_Riefenstahl) was offered the role of female lead by producer [Erich Pommer](/source/Erich_Pommer), but after doing a [screen test](/source/Screen_test) she turned it down.[3]
