# Peter Wyon

**Peter Wyon** (1767–1822) was a British [engraver](/source/Engraving) of [medals](/source/Medal) and [coins](/source/Coin). He was born into a family who had a long tradition of dye-engraving.[1] He was the son of George Wyon, as well as the brother of [Thomas Wyon](/source/Thomas_Wyon_the_elder), with whom he went into business for a short time.[2] Both his nephew, [Thomas Wyon](/source/Thomas_Wyon), and his son, [William Wyon](/source/William_Wyon), held the position of Chief Engraver at the [Royal Mint](/source/Royal_Mint).[3][4]

After his brother went to [London](/source/London), Wyon remained working in [Birmingham](/source/Birmingham).[5] Wyon worked for the manufacturer and business man, [Matthew Boulton](/source/Matthew_Boulton) (1728-1809) in [Soho](/source/Soho), [Birmingham](/source/Birmingham).[1] He was associated with the [Royal Birmingham Society of Artists](/source/Royal_Birmingham_Society_of_Artists).
