**Peter James Winterbottom** [MBE](/source/Member_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) (born 31 May 1960 in [Otley](/source/Otley), [West Yorkshire](/source/West_Yorkshire)), is an English former [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player who played as an openside [flanker](/source/Flanker_(rugby_union)). He was [England](/source/England_national_rugby_union_team)'s most-capped openside (with 58 [caps](/source/Caps_(sport))) until being overtaken by [Neil Back](/source/Neil_Back) in 2003. He made his England debut on 2 January 1982 against [Australia](/source/Australia_national_rugby_union_team), and his final appearance on 20 March 1993 against [Ireland](/source/Ireland_national_rugby_union_team).

Winterbottom was selected for two [British and Irish Lions](/source/British_and_Irish_Lions) tours in [1983](/source/1983_British_Lions_tour_to_New_Zealand) and [1993](/source/1993_British_Lions_tour_to_New_Zealand), both to [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand), where he impressed the locals with his fine play, albeit on losing sides. Overall, he played 19 games for the Lions including 7 tests and scored one try. He was the second England player to reach 50 caps, after [Rory Underwood](/source/Rory_Underwood), and was inducted onto the [Twickenham](/source/Twickenham_Stadium) "Wall of Fame" in November 2005.[1]

Winterbottom played club rugby for [Headingley](/source/Leeds_Carnegie), Harlequins and also played provincial rugby for [Hawkes Bay](/source/Hawkes_Bay) in [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand) and Transvaal in [South Africa](/source/South_Africa)

## After rugby

Since his playing career ended, Winterbottom carved out a career in finance. He worked as a corporate bond broker for Tullett & Tokyo Ltd and BGC Partners alongside [Ben Clarke](/source/Ben_Clarke).[2]

Winterbottom served as Director of Rugby at [Esher RFC](/source/Esher_RFC) between 2019 and 2025.[3].

## Personal life

Winterbottom is the uncle of [James Leuzinger](/source/James_Leuzinger), who represented [Great Britain](/source/Team_GB) at the [2006 Winter Olympics](/source/2006_Winter_Olympics).[4]
