**Peter Whitford** (born 1939) is an Australian former radio, theatre, television and film character actor known for numerous roles particularly as wealthy businessmen and members of the aristocracy.

## Early life

Peter Whitford was born in [Adelaide](/source/Adelaide), South Australia. He studied at Sydney's [National Institute of Dramatic Art](/source/National_Institute_of_Dramatic_Art) (NIDA), graduating in 1963 with a Diploma of Dramatic Art (Acting).[1]

## Career

Whitford is an actor, playwright, director and singer, who started his career in radio roles and then in theatre, beginning in 1958.[2]

From the 1960s, Whitford then began appearing in film and television roles, which he continued up until 2010. When he graduated from [NIDA](/source/National_Institute_of_Dramatic_Art) in 1963, Whitford performed in [ABC Radio](/source/ABC_Radio_Sydney) play, *King of Hearts*.[3] He then played Jack Porter in the long-running radio serial *[Blue Hills](/source/Blue_Hills_(radio_serial))*.[4]

Whitford's theatre credits are numerous. His early stage roles were in university theatre at NIDA, in plays such as *[Julius Caesar](/source/Julius_Caesar_(play))*, *[Hamlet](/source/Hamlet)*, *[The Crucible](/source/The_Crucible)*, *[Waiting for Godot](/source/Waiting_for_Godot)* and *[The Cherry Orchard](/source/The_Cherry_Orchard)*.[2] He went on to act in productions for Northside Theatre Company, [STC](/source/Sydney_Theatre_Company), [MTC](/source/Melbourne_Theatre_Company), [Queensland Theatre Company](/source/Queensland_Theatre), [Old Tote Theatre Company](/source/Old_Tote_Theatre_Company) and [Belvoir Street](/source/Belvoir_(theatre_company)).[2] He also ventured into musical theatre with singing roles as the Governor in *[The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas](/source/The_Best_Little_Whorehouse_in_Texas)*, Moonface Martin in *[Anything Goes](/source/Anything_Goes)* and Sir John in *[Me and My Girl](/source/Me_and_My_Girl)*.[3]

Whitford had main roles in television beginning with the titular bachelor, Peter Prentice in [Logie Award](/source/Logie_Awards)-winning ABC sitcom *[I've Married A Bachelor](/source/I've_Married_A_Bachelor)* in 1968,[5] and followed by racing car driver and Vera Collins' husband, Guy Sutton in soap opera *[Number 96](/source/Number_96_(TV_series))* in 1976.[6] Otherwise, he mostly took on guest roles in his early television career, in series including *[Ryan](/source/Ryan_(TV_series))*,[7] *[Division 4](/source/Division_4)*,[3] *[The Sullivans](/source/The_Sullivans)*, *[Chopper Squad](/source/Chopper_Squad)*, *[Prisoner](/source/Prisoner_(TV_series))*, *[Cop Shop](/source/Cop_Shop)*, *[Kingswood Country](/source/Kingswood_Country)*,[8] *[A Country Practice](/source/A_Country_Practice)* and *[Mother and Son](/source/Mother_and_Son)*.[9]

Whitford had a recurring role in *[Carson's Law](/source/Carson's_Law)* in 1983,[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] and appeared in the 1984 [Kennedy Miller](/source/Kennedy_Miller_Mitchell) [Test cricket](/source/Test_cricket) miniseries *[Bodyline](/source/Bodyline_(miniseries))*, opposite [Hugo Weaving](/source/Hugo_Weaving) and [Gary Sweet](/source/Gary_Sweet).[10] He then played the regular role of ruthless businessman and would-be developer, Ashley Wheeler in 1985 children's series, *[The Henderson Kids](/source/The_Henderson_Kids)*, also starring [Kylie Minogue](/source/Kylie_Minogue), [Ben Mendelsohn](/source/Ben_Mendelsohn) and [Nadine Garner](/source/Nadine_Garner).[11][12]

During this time, Whitford also appeared in several films, including 1979 period drama *[My Brilliant Career](/source/My_Brilliant_Career_(film))* starring [Judy Davis](/source/Judy_Davis) and [Sam Neill](/source/Sam_Neill),[13] 1983 biopic *[Phar Lap](/source/Phar_Lap_(film))* about the famed racing horse[14] and 1986 [Ozploitation](/source/Ozploitation) film *[Dead End Drive-In](/source/Dead_End_Drive-In)*.[15]

Whitford then featured alongside [Rebecca Gibney](/source/Rebecca_Gibney) and [Kerry Armstrong](/source/Kerry_Armstrong) in 1990 miniseries *[Come in Spinner](/source/Come_in_Spinner_(miniseries))*, as Mr Sharlton.[16] He played a recurring role on *[Home and Away](/source/Home_and_Away)* as Doctor Worthington from 1994 to 1995.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] He then had an ongoing role as retirement village resident Johnno Johnstone, in comedy series *[Bullpitt!](/source/Bullpitt!)* from 1997 to 1998.[10] He had guest roles throughout the late 1980s and 1990s in *[Rafferty's Rules](/source/Rafferty's_Rules)*, *[The Flying Doctors](/source/The_Flying_Doctors)*, *[G.P.](/source/G.P.)*, *[Police Rescue](/source/Police_Rescue)*, *[E Street](/source/E_Street_(TV_series))*, *[Blue Heelers](/source/Blue_Heelers)*.[9]

Whitford starred as dancing official Les Kendall in [Baz Luhrmann’s](/source/Baz_Luhrmann) first film, the 1992 dance extravaganza *[Strictly Ballroom](/source/Strictly_Ballroom)*.[3] Other film roles of that time included *[Dad and Dave: On Our Selection](/source/Dad_and_Dave%3A_On_Our_Selection)* (1995) opposite [Geoffrey Rush](/source/Geoffrey_Rush) and [Noah Taylor](/source/Noah_Taylor),[17] and *[Oscar and Lucinda](/source/Oscar_and_Lucinda_(film))* (1997) alongside [Cate Blanchett](/source/Cate_Blanchett) and [Ralph Fiennes](/source/Ralph_Fiennes).[9] He played the stage manager in another one of [Baz Luhrmann’s](/source/Baz_Luhrmann) films, the 2001 musical *[Moulin Rouge!](/source/Moulin_Rouge!)* alongside [Nicole Kidman](/source/Nicole_Kidman) and [Ewan McGregor](/source/Ewan_McGregor).[18] That same year he had a part in comedy film *[The Man Who Sued God](/source/The_Man_Who_Sued_God)*, opposite [Judy Davis](/source/Judy_Davis) and [Billy Connolly](/source/Billy_Connolly).[19] The following year he appeared in legal drama *[Black and White](/source/Black_and_White_(2002_film))*, alongside [Robert Carlyle](/source/Robert_Carlyle), [Charles Dance](/source/Charles_Dance), [Colin Friels](/source/Colin_Friels) and [Ben Mendelsohn](/source/Ben_Mendelsohn).[20]
