# Peter Warshall

**Peter Warshall** (1940–2013) was an [ecologist](/source/Ecology), activist and essayist whose work centers on conservation and conservation-based development. He attended [Camp Rising Sun](/source/Camp_Rising_Sun_(New_York)) in 1958 and 1959. After receiving ab A.B. in biology from [Harvard](/source/Harvard) in 1964, he went on to study cultural anthropology at l'[École Pratique des Hautes Études](/source/%C3%89cole_Pratique_des_Hautes_%C3%89tudes) in Paris with [Claude Lévi-Strauss](/source/Claude_L%C3%A9vi-Strauss), as a [Fulbright Scholar](/source/Fulbright_Scholar). He then returned to Harvard where he earned his Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology.

Warshall's research interests include [natural history](/source/Natural_history), [natural resource management](/source/Natural_resource_management) (especially [watersheds](/source/Drainage_basin) and [wastewater](/source/Wastewater) practices), [conservation biology](/source/Conservation_biology), [biodiversity](/source/Biodiversity) assessments, [environmental impact analysis](/source/Environmental_impact_analysis), and [conflict resolution](/source/Conflict_resolution) and consensus building between divergent economic and cultural special interest groups. He has worked as a consultant for the [United Nations High Commission for Refugees](/source/United_Nations_High_Commission_for_Refugees) in [Ethiopia](/source/Ethiopia); for [USAID](/source/USAID) and other organizations in ten other African nations; he has worked with the [Tohono O'odham](/source/Tohono_O'odham) and [Apache](/source/Apache) people of Arizona; and advised corporations such as Senco, Clorox, Trans Hygga, and SAS Airlines, as well as municipal governments such as the city of [Malibu](/source/Malibu,_California).

Warshall was the [Sustainability](/source/Sustainability) and [Anthropology](/source/Anthropology) Editor of one of the later editions of the *[Whole Earth Catalog](/source/Whole_Earth_Catalog)* series, and served as an editor of its spin-off magazine, *[Whole Earth Review](/source/Whole_Earth_Review)*. He has taught at the [Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics](/source/Jack_Kerouac_School_of_Disembodied_Poetics) at [Naropa Institute](/source/Naropa_Institute).

He was elected to the board of the [Bolinas](/source/Bolinas) Community Public Utility District.[1]

## Personal life

Warshall died in April 2013 after a four-and-a-half year struggle with cancer. [3]
