Born June 1981 in [Weston-super-Mare](/source/Weston-super-Mare), Somerset, Trego made his [first-class](/source/first-class_cricket) debut for Somerset in April 2000 against Oxford Universities. He took two wickets in the match, but was not required to bat.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/69/69553.html|title=Somerset v Oxford Universities in 2000|publisher=Cricket Archive|access-date=24 August 2009}}</ref> His first appearance in [county cricket](/source/county_cricket) came two months later, playing a [Norwich Union National League](/source/Pro40) game against [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club). Towards the end of the [2000 season](/source/2000_English_cricket_season), Trego was selected as part of the [England under-19 cricket team](/source/England_under-19_cricket_team) to play the touring [Sri Lanka national under-19 cricket team](/source/Sri_Lanka_national_under-19_cricket_team). He appeared in all three [One Day International](/source/One_Day_International)s (ODIs), scoring a [half century](/source/Glossary_of_cricket_terms) and taking four wickets as he did so. Trego also plays football as a goalkeeper to a reasonable level. Peter went to Wyvern Comprehensive School, now Hans Price Academy, in Weston-super-Mare.
