After completing a successful junior career with the [Windsor Spitfires](/source/Windsor_Spitfires) and the [Sarnia Sting](/source/Sarnia_Sting) of the [OHL](/source/Ontario_Hockey_League), in which he twice led the league in points, Sarno apprenticed in the Oilers farm system, playing for their [AHL](/source/American_Hockey_League) team, the [Hamilton Bulldogs](/source/Hamilton_Bulldogs_(AHL)).{{citation needed|date=February 2019}}  After one season in [Finland](/source/Finland), Sarno returned to [North America](/source/North_America), where he played for the Oilers new AHL franchise, the [Toronto Roadrunners](/source/Toronto_Roadrunners).{{citation needed|date=February 2019}}  He also made his [NHL](/source/National_Hockey_League) debut, playing six games with the big club.  Shortly thereafter, he was dealt to the [Vancouver Canucks](/source/Vancouver_Canucks), who wanted more depth at their centre position. Sarno then moved to Europe, signing with [HC Fribourg-Gottéron](/source/HC_Fribourg-Gott%C3%A9ron) in the [Nationalliga A](/source/National_League_A) in [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland) in 2006, followed by three seasons in the [Deutsche Eishockey Liga](/source/Deutsche_Eishockey_Liga) in [Germany](/source/Germany), two with the [Hamburg Freezers](/source/Hamburg_Freezers) and one with [Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg](/source/Grizzly_Adams_Wolfsburg).
