# Peter Nott

**Peter John Nott** (30 December 1933 – 20 August 2018) was an English [Anglican](/source/Anglican) [bishop](/source/Bishop):[1] from 1985 to 1999, he served as [Bishop of Norwich](/source/Bishop_of_Norwich).[2]

Nott was educated at [Bristol Grammar School](/source/Bristol_Grammar_School), [Dulwich College](/source/Dulwich_College) and [Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge](/source/Fitzwilliam_College,_Cambridge).[3] He began his ordained ministry as a [curate](/source/Curate) at [Harpenden](/source/Harpenden) after which he was [chaplain](/source/Chaplain) at Fitzwilliam College and then [Rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of [Beaconsfield](/source/Beaconsfield).[4] In 1977 he was appointed the [suffragan](/source/Suffragan_bishop) [Bishop of Taunton](/source/Bishop_of_Taunton);[5] he was ordained a bishop on 18 October 1977, by [Donald Coggan](/source/Donald_Coggan), [Archbishop of Canterbury](/source/Archbishop_of_Canterbury), at [St Paul's Cathedral](/source/St_Paul's_Cathedral).[6] He was [translated](/source/Translation_(ecclesiastical)) to be the [Bishop of Norwich](/source/Bishop_of_Norwich)[7] upon the [confirmation of his election](/source/Confirmation_of_bishops) on 12 November 1985.[8] He retired in 1999 but continued to serve as an honorary [assistant bishop](/source/Assistant_bishop) in the [Diocese of Oxford](/source/Diocese_of_Oxford).
