# Peter Monau

**Peter Monau** (Latin: *Petrus Monavius*; 9 April 1551 – 12 May 1588) was a court physician of Emperor [Rudolf II](/source/Rudolf_II,_Holy_Roman_Emperor).

## Biography

He was the son of Stenzel Monau and younger brother of [Jakob Monau](/source/Jakob_Monau). After several years of humanistic studies in [Wittenberg](/source/University_of_Wittenberg) and [Heidelberg](/source/University_of_Heidelberg), he devoted himself from 1575 to 1578 to medical studies in [Padua](/source/University_of_Padua). Having earned his doctorate in [Basel](/source/University_of_Basel) with [Felix Platter](/source/Felix_Platter) with the work *De dentium affectibus* (the first doctoral theses in [stomatology](/source/Stomatology)),[1] he settled in [Breslau](/source/Wroc%C5%82aw) as physician. In 1580, he was named imperial physician (*[Archiater](/source/Archiater) Caesareus*) by Rudolf II on the recommendation of [Johannes Crato von Krafftheim](/source/Johannes_Crato_von_Krafftheim).

He carried out a correspondence with the Heidelberg Orientalist [Jakob Christmann](/source/Jakob_Christmann) and Augsburg Rector [David Hoeschel](/source/David_Hoeschel) to 1584.[2] He also corresponded with the Heidelberg and Basel medical professor [Thomas Erastus](/source/Thomas_Erastus). He died in [Prague](/source/Prague).
