Magadini was born in [Great Barrington, Massachusetts](/source/Great_Barrington%2C_Massachusetts), to Charles and Ruth Magadini.<ref name="MD">Alleyne, Katherine. March 1984. "Pete Magadini" ''Modern Drummer Magazine''. p.29.</ref> At the age of six, the family moved to [Palm Springs, California](/source/Palm_Springs%2C_California), where he played in the elementary school band.<ref name="MD" /> Magadini's professional career began recording singles for [Lee Hazlewood](/source/Lee_Hazlewood) and [Lester Sill](/source/Lester_Sill) while attending high school in [Phoenix, Arizona](/source/Phoenix%2C_Arizona).<ref name="DB">Miller, Mark. In 1960, Magadini studied drum set with [Roy Burns](/source/Roy_Burns_(drummer)) at the Henry Adler Drum School in New York City. He then enrolled at the [San Francisco Conservatory of Music](/source/San_Francisco_Conservatory_of_Music) where he studied timpani with [New York Philharmonic](/source/New_York_Philharmonic) timpanist Roland Kohloff, graduating with a [Bachelor of Music](/source/Bachelor_of_Music) degree in 1965.<ref name="DB" /> During his time in San Francisco he formed a trio with keyboardist [George Duke](/source/George_Duke), also a student at the Conservatory, and performed with the [Oakland Symphony Orchestra](/source/Oakland_Symphony_Orchestra).<ref>San Francisco Chronicle. 1966</ref> In 1973 he graduated from the [University of Toronto](/source/University_of_Toronto) with [Master of Music](/source/Master_of_Music) in Percussion and Performance – "w.distinction".

In 1976 Magadini produced ''Polyrhthym'', for IBis Records, featuring himself, George Duke, Don Menza and Dave Young.
