Mitton and co.|location=Freetown, Sierra leone}}</ref>{{rp|viii}} Whilst serving in [Sierra Leone](/source/Sierra_Leone), he was sent by the governor, [Charles MacCarthy](/source/Charles_MacCarthy_(British_Army_officer)) to the [Iles de Los](/source/Iles_de_Los), for his health.<ref name="McLachlan"/>{{rp|ix}} He was also requested to write a report on the area, in which connection he made three trips to the mainland of what is now [Guinea](/source/Guinea), in particular he covered the areas around [Rio Nunez](/source/Rio_Nunez), [Rio Pongo](/source/Pongo_River_(Guinea)) and the [Fatala River](/source/Fatala_River).<ref name="McLachlan"/>{{rp|ix}} His report ''Travels into the Baga and Soosoo country during the year 1821'' was first published in the ''[Royal Gazette and Sierra Leone Advertiser](/source/Royal_Gazette_and_Sierra_Leone_Advertiser)'', October–November 1821. These instalments were then gathered to gether in a single book published in [Freetown](/source/Freetown), Sierra Leone, this being perhaps the first [monograph](/source/monograph) published in [Sub-Saharan Africa](/source/Sub-Saharan_Africa).<ref name="McLachlan"/>{{rp|x}}

Machlan served as a four-year apprenticeship with Dr Thomas Millar, a surgeon in [Greenock](/source/Greenock), [Renfrewshire](/source/Renfrewshire).<ref name="McLachlan"/>{{rp|vii}} He then got a job at the Merchant Seaman's Hospital, but after a year he became a student at the [Glasgow Royal Infirmary](/source/Glasgow_Royal_Infirmary).<ref name="McLachlan"/>{{rp|viii}} He then moved to [Edinburgh](/source/Edinburgh). Eventually in 1814 he received a diploma from the [Royal College of Surgeons](/source/Royal_College_of_Surgeons_of_Edinburgh) there.{{rp|viii}} He then joined the Army with the role of [Hospital Mate](/source/Hospital_Mate) on 14 July 1815.{{rp|viii}}
