'''Peter Kooij''' (or, internationally '''Kooy''', born 17 September 1954, in [Soest](/source/Soest_(Netherlands)), Netherlands)<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.allmusic.com/artist/peter-kooij-mn0001675021|title=Peter Kooij Songs, Albums, Reviews, Bio & More...|website=[AllMusic](/source/AllMusic)|access-date=September 17, 2025}}</ref> is a Dutch [bass singer](/source/bass_singer) who specializes in [baroque music](/source/baroque_music).

== Biography ==
Kooij started his musical career at six years as a choir boy. However he started his musical studies as a violin student. He came back to singing, with tuition from [Max van Egmond](/source/Max_van_Egmond) at the [Sweelinck Conservatorium](/source/Conservatorium_van_Amsterdam) in [Amsterdam](/source/Amsterdam) which led in 1980 to the award of the diploma for solo performance.<ref>booklet of CD HMC 901365 (Bach Cantatas for bass BWV 56, 82 & 128)</ref>

His international career started in 1981 under the direction of [Philippe Herreweghe](/source/Philippe_Herreweghe), with [La Chapelle Royale](/source/La_Chapelle_Royale) and the [Collegium Vocale Gent](/source/Collegium_Vocale_Gent), with whom he interpreted mainly [Johann Sebastian Bach](/source/Johann_Sebastian_Bach),<ref>Kooij is known for his interpretations of [Bach](/source/Johann_Sebastian_Bach) bass arias (e.g. [BWV 39](/source/BWV_39), [BWV 73](/source/BWV_73), [BWV 243](/source/BWV_243), [BWV 245](/source/BWV_245), and [BWV 248](/source/BWV_248)).</ref> and also performed [Henri Dumont](/source/Henri_Dumont), [Marc-Antoine Charpentier](/source/Marc-Antoine_Charpentier), [Jean-Baptiste Lully](/source/Jean-Baptiste_Lully), [Heinrich Schütz](/source/Heinrich_Sch%C3%BCtz) and [Jean Gilles](/source/Jean_Gilles_(composer)).<ref>He recorded [Jean Gilles](/source/Jean_Gilles_(composer))' ''Requiem'' (with ([Agnès Mellon](/source/Agn%C3%A8s_Mellon), [Howard Crook](/source/Howard_Crook), and [Hervé Lamy](/source/Herv%C3%A9_Lamy)).</ref>
From the mid-1990s much of his career was dedicated to the recording of Bach's complete [cantata](/source/Bach_cantata)s with the [Bach Collegium Japan](/source/Bach_Collegium_Japan), directed by [Masaaki Suzuki](/source/Masaaki_Suzuki).

In 2002 he founded together with [Monika Frimmer](/source/Monika_Frimmer), [Christa Bonhoff](/source/Christa_Bonhoff) and [Dantes Diwiak](/source/Dantes_Diwiak) a quartet ''Tanto Canto'' to sing rarely performed music [a cappella](/source/a_cappella), with piano or with ensemble. The quartet recorded in 2005 excerpts from the collections ''Augsburger Tafel-Confect'' (short for: ''Ohren-vergnügendes und Gemüth-ergötzendes Tafel-Confect'', in English: ''Augsburg Table Confectionery, Pleasuring the Ears and Delightful to the Soul'') of the composers [Valentin Rathgeber](/source/Valentin_Rathgeber) and [Johann Caspar Seyfert](/source/Johann_Caspar_Seyfert).<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=108507 |title=Rathgeber: Tafel-confect |year=2005 |access-date=27 October 2010 |website=Arkivmusic.com}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2006/dec06/rathgeber_9999952.htm |title=Rathgeber (1682-1750) Augsburgisches Tafel-Confect |year=2006 |access-date=31 October 2010 |website=Musicweb-international.com}}</ref>
