==Biography==
Born in [Westport](/source/Westport%2C_New_Zealand), Hawes gained a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree at the [University of Canterbury](/source/University_of_Canterbury), in [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch).

While living in [Barcelona](/source/Barcelona), he wrote a novel about the [Spanish Inquisition](/source/Spanish_Inquisition), a best seller in its Spanish translation by J. A. Several of his plays remain unperformed; for example, ''A Higher Form of Killing''.
