The son of Edgar France, he attended [Bradford Grammar School](/source/Bradford_Grammar_School) before going up to [Magdalen College, Oxford](/source/Magdalen_College%2C_Oxford), where he graduated as [BA](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) and [DPhil](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy). He was appointed a [Lecturer](/source/Lecturer) in [French](/source/French_language) at the [University of Sussex](/source/University_of_Sussex) in 1963, later being promoted as [Reader](/source/Reader_(academic_rank)).
